Allison and Michael discuss some of the features of realism and impressionism, and how these movements represent the first murmurings of “modern” art. Additionally, they address how and why female artists began to enjoy greater representation in the mid to late 1800s.

As I see it, patronage systems didn’t collapse, they became more diversify, especially in the US, where we hadn’t yet built the institutions that had centuries to develop in Europe. Additionally, individuals were the ones who started to wield financial independence vs the state.
As we get closer to the twentieth Century women became more influential in the arts. Cassatt patronized many of the impressionists artists. Hilla Rebay, as an abstract artist herself, was instrumental in Guggenheim investing in Kandinsky and other abstract artists of that era.
